Land Day is an important event for the Palestinians who live in Israel. In 1976, as a protest to the continuing policy of land expropriation, the Arab sector called a general strike. This culminated in the security forces killing six Palestinian Israeli citizens. Since 1977 this has been commemorated by demonstrations thoughout the Galilee. This year, however, was even more poignant after the security forces had killed a further thirteen Palestinian citizens of Israel during the October 2000 demonstrations. These demonstrations had been held to show solidarity for the Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories. |
